The main event

The people who made it.

Not a rep. Not us reading the back label. The winemaker, pouring their own wine.

Tuesday 22 September · Bot River

Luddite and Genevieve

With Niels Verburg and Melissa Nelsen

Two Bot River farms in one room. Niels Verburg runs Luddite with his wife Penny, and the Shiraz is what the farm is known for, alongside the Chenin Blanc and the Saboteur blend. Melissa Nelsen's Genevieve is Cap Classique off Chardonnay, grown up the same road. Bubbles first, then red, and both of them pouring their own.

Monday 28 and Tuesday 29 September · Swartland

Mullineux

With Kyle Martin

The Swartland made simple. Three Syrahs off three different grounds, Schist, Granite and Iron, made by the same hands in the same year, so the only thing that changes between the glasses is the rock they grew on. Two nights, because one room will not take everyone who wants this one.

Wednesday 30 September · Elim and the Cape South Coast

Trizanne

With Trizanne Barnard

Trizanne Barnard started her own label in 2008 and built it on the cold edges of the Cape. Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon off Elim, Syrah out of the Swartland, and the Seascape range from the coast. Whites that taste of where they came from, poured by the person who picked the sites.

Monday 12 October · Cederberg

Cederberg

With David Nieuwoudt

The highest vineyards in the Cape, and the last date of the run. David Nieuwoudt pours across the three ranges: Cederberg itself, Ghost Corner, which is grown at Elim on the southern tip, and Five Generations, the flagship. Altitude at one end of the country, cold sea at the other, one cellar.

Wednesday 7 to Saturday 10 October

Shiraz Week.

Four days in the middle of the run, and the one week of the year these bottles get lined up side by side. Two sit down masterclasses, then two parties over the weekend. Forty wines in total.

Wednesday 7 October · two sittings

Masterclass Focus

The comparative one, and the one collectors come for. A three vintage Porseleinberg vertical, Mullineux's Schist, Granite and Iron side by side, and Saronsberg's top three in order. Same hands, same year, only the ground changes.

Thursday 8 October · two sittings

Masterclass Vineyard

The broad one. Exceptional South African Shiraz from one end of the Cape to the other, the iconic names alongside rare releases and single vineyard wines, from the highest vineyards in the Cederberg to a block planted in 1968.

Friday 9 and Saturday 10 October

The Shiraz Party

Twenty wines open at once, no running order and no seating plan. Taste at your own pace, come and go as you like. Every wine being poured is available to buy and the till is open. Same twenty wines both nights.

Come to both masterclasses and you will have tasted twenty of the best Shiraz in the country in two days. Four wines carry over between them, so the twenty pours are sixteen different bottles.
